How to Read a Crime Map

  • These are reports made to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. They are not charges, not convictions, and not a finding that anything occurred.
  • The JSO records each incident at the hundred block, not the exact address. A point on this map is a block, not a house.
  • The number covers a circle drawn around one point. A circle is not a neighborhood boundary — it takes in streets, businesses and roads that have nothing to do with the homes inside it.
  • Report volume tracks how many people, businesses and roads fall inside the circle. A circle over a highway interchange or a shopping centre will always hold more reports than one over the same number of houses alone. Comparing two circles of different character tells you very little.
  • A larger radius is not a bigger problem — it is a bigger circle. Change the radius above and watch the number move without a single fact changing.
  • The HOA Collective publishes these counts exactly as the agency records them. We do not score, grade, rate, rank or compare neighborhoods, and we draw no conclusions from these numbers. What they mean for you is your call to make.
